Aurelo User Guide

Aurelo is a professional live accessibility and translation system that uses artificial intelligence for real-time captions, text translation, and optional spoken voice translation. The software supports over 60 languages and is designed specifically for church services, conferences, and live events.

Video Guide: Check out our YouTube channel for step-by-step video tutorials.

1. Download and Installation

Step 1: Download the Software

  • Visit dash.aurelolive.com/downloads
  • Choose the version for your operating system (macOS or Windows)
  • The free plan includes 2 hours of translation time per month, forever — no credit card required

Step 2: Installation

  • macOS: Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag Aurelo to the Applications folder
  • Windows: Run the installation file and follow the steps

Step 3: Registration and Login

  • On first launch, you will be asked to register or log in with your account
  • Registration is free and includes 2 hours of translation time every month, forever — no credit card required

2. Computer Setup and Connection

Recommended: Direct Connection to Mixer

  • Connect your computer with an audio cable directly to the mixing console
  • Use a USB audio interface or jack cable
  • This provides clean sound from the microphone without ambient noise
  • → Significantly improves recognition and translation quality

Alternative: Built-in Microphone

  • The laptop's built-in microphone can be used

⚠️ Warning: This option leads to more errors due to ambient noise. Recommended only for testing or small groups.

Selecting Audio Device in the Program

In the top bar of the program, there are two audio level indicators:

  • First one (with microphone icon) is for input audio - select your microphone or audio interface here
  • Second one (with speaker icon) is for output audio - the translated voice
  • Click on the indicator to select a device from the dropdown menu
  • You can mute/unmute the input or output by clicking directly on the microphone or speaker icon

⚠️ Important: Never use the laptop's built-in microphone and speakers at the same time! This will create audio feedback loops and severely disrupt the translation. Always use headphones or external audio devices to prevent this issue.

3. Live Test Mode (First Run)

When you log in for the first time, Aurelo opens directly on the Live page in Live Test Mode. This is a guided real test with your microphone (not a demo) and uses your normal quota minutes.

How It Works

  • You will see a What to Expect card, language selection, and a Start Live Test button
  • Before starting, some options are locked until the test begins (for example, Settings, Listeners, and Enable listener access)
  • Audio remains available so you can configure audio devices anytime

Step 1: Select Languages

  • Choose Source Language (Input) and Target Language (Output)
  • Then press Start Live Test

Step 2: Run the Test

  • Live output starts in real time
  • Locked tabs and actions are unlocked while the test is running

Step 3: Stop and Exit Test Mode

  • Press Stop Test to end the test session
  • After your first stop, you will see Set up for real service
  • When you choose it, Live Test Mode is completed and you move to normal operation

Live Test Mode is also completed automatically if you:

  • Press Enable listener access
  • Select a professional/non-microphone input device in Audio and press Save

⚠️ Note: If microphone permission is not granted, Aurelo will ask you to allow microphone access before starting the Live Test.

4. Program Settings

Open Settings from the navigation to access all settings.

4.1 Language Settings

Setting Description
Source Language (Input) The language being spoken
Primary Target Language (Audio Output) The main translated language. Local WiFi listeners receive this language.
Languages Available to Internet Listeners Add the languages people can choose from on the public Internet listener page. The primary target language is always included.

Supported Languages (60+): Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Kazakh, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Welsh.

Multilingual listener access: Add the languages needed for the service before starting the session. Internet listeners choose from the languages you make available; local WiFi listening continues to use the primary target language.

4.2 Live Output Modes

The Live Output section in Settings controls what Aurelo produces during a session. Live captions are always available when your plan includes captions. Translation and Voice Mode can be enabled separately depending on your plan.

Mode What it does
Captions Shows the original spoken language as live captions. This is the default text output for captions-only plans and is useful for deaf/hard-of-hearing accessibility.
Translation Adds translated text in the target language. When Translation is off, translation-specific fields such as Translation Terms are hidden.
Voice Mode Adds spoken translated audio. Turning on Voice Mode automatically enables Translation because the voice is generated from the translated text.

Plan defaults: Full voice plans start with Captions, Translation, and Voice Mode enabled by default. Captions-only and text-only plans show only the modes available on that plan.

4.3 Voice & Audio Settings

Setting Description
Voice Selection Choose a separate translated voice for each enabled listener language
Voice Speed Set the base speaking speed separately for each enabled language
Automatic Speed Lets Aurelo adjust playback speed when needed to keep translated speech flowing naturally
Control All Applies the same speed controls across all enabled listener languages

Available Voices:

  • Aurelo includes multiple natural-sounding voices for different styles and preferences
  • Each enabled language has its own voice and speed settings
  • Use the preview action in the voice menu to hear a voice in that language before the service
  • Voice settings cannot be changed while a translation session is active

4.4 Translation Mode

Mode Description
Real-time (token-level) Fastest option. Speaks in smaller chunks with less delay.
Higher quality (sentence-level) Uses more context for smoother phrasing and higher quality, with more delay.

4.5 Additional Instructions

Aurelo includes one main instructions area for speech recognition context, plus extra fields for important terms and preferred translations when Translation is enabled.

You can use this section for special instructions such as:

  • Specific terminology
  • Names of people or places
  • Event context
  • Words Aurelo should recognize exactly as spoken
  • Specific source words that should always translate in a certain way when Translation is enabled

Example: "This is a church service. Translate biblical terms accurately. The pastor's name is John Smith."

You can also add:

  • Terms — words or phrases Aurelo should recognize correctly
  • Translation terms — source-to-target word pairs that should always translate the same way. This section is shown only when Translation is enabled.

4.6 Real-Time Delivery Controls

When using real-time translation or Voice Mode, Aurelo also provides extra controls to shape how speech is grouped before it is spoken:

  • Pause Detection Mode — waits for short speech pauses before speaking a chunk
  • Auto Segment Management — automatically balances smoothness and speed during live playback
  • Wait For Punctuation — tries to hold a chunk until it ends more naturally
  • Number of phrases combined before speaking — controls how quickly Aurelo speaks vs. how much context it waits for

5. How Listeners Receive Captions, Translation, or Voice

Option A: Listening via Phone (QR Code)

This is the easiest way - listeners use their own phones. Depending on your active mode, the same listener page can show captions, translated text, or translated audio with text.

Step 1: Start Listener Access

  • In the top bar of the program, next to the translation button, there is an "Enable listener access" button
  • Press "Enable listener access" - the button will turn orange and show "Disable listener access"
  • This turns on local listener access and generates the QR code and local listener link

Step 2: Configure Languages and Access Mode

  • Before starting the session, open Settings and choose the Primary Target Language (Audio Output)
  • Under Languages Available to Internet Listeners, add the other languages needed for this service
  • Go to "Live" from the navigation
  • Open the "Network Streaming" section (click the arrow to expand)
  • Local WiFi access stays available with the primary target language as soon as listener access is enabled
  • Turn on Internet listeners to let listeners choose from the languages you enabled, connect over mobile data, or listen remotely
  • Use the Local WiFi / Internet view buttons to switch between the two sharing modes

Step 3: Choose the Correct Listener Link

  • If more than one network connection is detected, choose the local network your listeners are actually using
  • The QR code and displayed link update based on the selected local network or internet view
  • You can copy the URL, open it in a browser, or let listeners scan the QR code

Step 4: Connect Listeners

  • Listeners scan the QR code with their phone camera
  • Or open the correct listener link directly in the browser
  • Internet listeners select one of the languages you made available; local WiFi listeners receive the primary target language

Requirements for Listeners:

  • Phone/tablet/laptop with web browser
  • Headphones (wired or Bluetooth) when Voice Mode is active
  • For local listening, connection to the same local WiFi network as the computer running Aurelo
  • For internet listening, use the public listener link from the Internet view — listeners can connect from mobile data or remote locations
  • No app installation required!

What Listeners See:

  • Captions-only mode: original-language live captions, with no translated audio stream
  • Translation-only mode: translated text, with no audio stream
  • Voice Mode: translated text and spoken translated audio

Tips: In Settings, you can set a stable listener slug so your public listener link and QR code stay consistent across sessions. You can also print the QR code in advance for easier access. On Android Chrome, listeners may need to tap Enable Audio before browser audio can play. Usage for an additional language is metered only while that language has active listeners.

Option B: Existing Translation System

If you have a professional translation system with receivers:

  1. Connect the computer's audio output to:
    • Directly to the system transmitter via jack cable
    • Or to the mixer via jack/USB, then to the transmitter
  2. Listeners use standard receivers and headphones

6. Listeners & Caption Pages

The Listeners page contains the local and internet sharing links, QR codes, and dedicated browser pages for captions and translated text.

  • Captions page — displays real-time captions of the spoken audio in the original language. Ideal for deaf/hard-of-hearing accessibility.
  • Translation page — displays translated text in the target language, updated in real time as the speaker talks. This page is shown when Translation is enabled.

Accessing Caption Pages

Each output has its own URL when that output is available:

  • Go to "Listeners" from the menu in the Aurelo app
  • Captions URL: http://192.168.1.100:3030/subtitles — shows original language captions
  • Translation URL: http://192.168.1.100:3030/subtitles/translation — shows translated text when Translation is enabled
  • If more than one local network is available, choose the correct network for your audience before sharing the URL or QR code
  • You can download the QR code directly from the Listeners page for sharing or printing
  • You can configure settings such as font size, number of lines, padding, line spacing, font, and background for the available pages

Use Cases for Caption Pages

The caption and translation browser pages can be used in multiple ways:

1. OBS / Live Streaming

To display Aurelo captions or translated text in OBS Studio:

  1. Open the Aurelo app and log in.
  2. Turn on "Enable listener access" in the top bar. This turns on local sharing and generates the local browser URLs.
  3. In the Aurelo app, open "Listeners".
  4. If needed, choose the correct local network before copying the browser URL.
  5. Copy either the Captions URL or the Translation URL, depending on what you want to display.
  6. Open OBS Studio.
  7. In the Sources section, click "+" and add a Browser Source.
  8. Paste the Aurelo URL into the Browser Source settings.
  9. Adjust the settings as needed, such as size, position, and refresh behavior, then click "OK".

Once set up, Aurelo live captions or translated text appear directly in your OBS scene and stream.

Use the captions URL for original-language captions, or the translation URL for translated subtitles.

2. Venue Screens (ProPresenter, etc.)

  • Add the captions or translation URL as a browser source in ProPresenter or similar presentation software
  • Display live captions or translated text on screens in the venue
  • Helps attendees who cannot hear well, prefer to read along, or speak a different language

3. Personal Devices

  • Open either browser URL in any web browser
  • Works on phones, tablets, laptops, or smart TVs
  • No app installation required
  • Each person can view captions or translated text on their own device

Key Difference: Captions (/subtitles) show the original spoken language in real time. Translation subtitles (/subtitles/translation) show translated text in the target language. Voice Mode provides spoken translated audio. The visible options depend on your active mode and plan.

⚠️ Important: Make sure "Enable listener access" is enabled in the top bar for local listener and caption pages to work.

7. Starting a Session

In the top bar of the program, there are two buttons:

Button Function Colors
Start / Stop Starts or stops the active output mode: Captions, Translation, or Voice Mode Green = active, Red when stopping
Enable listener access / Disable listener access Turns local listener and subtitle sharing on or off Blue = inactive, Orange = active

Steps to Start:

  1. Open Aurelo and log into your account
  2. Select the correct audio device from the top bar
  3. If you want QR code for phones - press "Enable listener access"
  4. If you want remote/mobile-data listening, open Network Streaming and turn on Internet listeners
  5. Press "Start" to begin the session
  6. The indicator will turn green when the system is active
  7. Speak into the microphone - captions, translated text, or voice output will appear based on your Settings

To stop: Press "Stop" (the red button)

During a session, the Live page shows either a captions transcript or a translation timeline depending on your active mode. Transcript download is available after the service when it is included in your plan.

8. Usage Tracking

In Settings you can see:

Information Description
Current Plan Your current subscription plan
Period Start / End The current billing or quota period dates
Used Minutes used during the current period
Remaining Minutes remaining
Total Total minutes in the plan
Extra Hours Additional time beyond your plan quota, if available on your account
Additional-language usage Usage for an additional language is metered only while that language has active Internet listeners. Enabling a language by itself does not meter usage, and usage is not multiplied by the number of listeners.

⚠️ Warning: At 70% usage you will see a yellow warning. At 90% - red.

9. Troubleshooting

Problem: No Sound in Voice Mode

  • Check if the input audio device is correctly selected from the top bar
  • Check if the microphone indicator responds when speaking
  • Make sure the computer sound is not muted
  • Check if the microphone icon is not crossed out (muted)
  • If listeners use Android Chrome, ask them to tap Enable Audio on the listener page before expecting browser audio playback

Problem: Listeners Cannot Connect

  • Make sure you pressed "Enable listener access" from the top bar
  • If you are using the public listener link, make sure Internet listeners is turned on in the Network Streaming section
  • If you are using local listening, check that the computer and phones are on the same WiFi network
  • If Aurelo shows more than one local network, make sure you selected the correct one for your listeners
  • Check whether your router or access point has client isolation / AP isolation / guest network isolation enabled, which can block phones from reaching the Aurelo computer even on the same WiFi
  • If Aurelo asked for network access when it first started, make sure you clicked Allow
  • If needed, open your operating system firewall settings later and allow Aurelo network access on both Private and Public networks
  • If you are using internet listening, confirm attendees opened the correct public listener link
  • Try restarting (Disable listener access → Enable listener access)
  • Check if the QR code is displayed in the Network Streaming section

Problem: Listeners See Captions but Not Translation

  • Open Settings → Live Output and make sure Translation is enabled
  • If Translation is disabled or not included in the plan, listeners will receive captions-only output
  • If Voice Mode is enabled, Translation is enabled automatically because the voice is generated from translated text

Problem: Poor Recognition Quality

  • Use direct connection to mixer instead of built-in microphone
  • Reduce ambient noise
  • Check the input signal level in the top bar

Problem: Quota Exhausted

  • Press Manage Subscription in Settings to upgrade your plan
  • Quota resets at the beginning of each period
